The right to the city is analyzed as a proposal that places the citizen as the main element of the city he/she has built and that constitutes one of the main human contributions to society. The citizen must become the backbone of all urban policies, which constitutes a city of the citizens. For several decades there have been bets for a sustainable city and more recently for a smart city. The opportunity of these strategies to enhance or not the right to the city and constitute, for example, a guarantor of access to a healthy urban environment, a fundamental right, is assessed.
